The black Phone, is a horror film starring Ethan Hawke based on a novel of the same name written by Joe Hill, which in turn is built from real events that happened to two young people in the United States in the 70’s; Its story is so twisted that it manages to be an effective horror film.
For many, horror films can be hit or miss. Often, they can be underwhelming, relying more on practical effects and scares than on storytelling and acting. But the recent release of “The Black Phone” has been a different kind of hit for many viewers. While not everyone is familiar with Joe Hill’s horror novel, his writing provided the perfect foundation for a compelling horror film.
The cast featured a couple of recognizable names like Ethan Hawke – whose daughter, Maya Hawke, you may know from Stranger Things and who will be appearing on screen with him soon – but also mostly unknown actors in the lead roles.
The villain of the film
A kidnapper and murderer, known as The Grabber, is about as sinister as it gets. He draws the protagonists and the audience in with unabashed simplicity, only to lead you into the jaws of living hell, only to trap you in a dark basement room, many marveling at Ethan Hawke’s performance.
Supernatural elements in keeping with reality
In horror films, a filmmaker can do all sorts of things to make it scarier. This includes the use of certain sound effects and music, lighting tricks, inverted images, and the list goes on and on. But many horrors and thrillers incorporate a supernatural element. However, supernatural aspects don’t always work, as they can sometimes make a film seem cheap or trite. What The Black Telephone does well is to seamlessly incorporate the supernatural elements and make them feel grounded in reality.
A prequel or a sequel?
Overall, The Black Telephone does a lot of things right and brings a good name to horror and suspense cinema. The entire cast and crew are full of great talent. It has been hinted that there will be a sequel, but nothing has been confirmed yet. As more people get a chance to enjoy this amazing film, we may be able to see the story in a new chapter.
